1.1.4.2 Obstruction

An airway obstruction is a blockage in any part of the airway due to a food or foreign object. An obstruction may totally prevent air from getting into lungs that would be life threatening emergencies that require immediate medical attention.

How is an airway obstruction treated?

  • An airway obstruction is usually a medical emergency. Call a national emergency phone number if someone near you is experiencing an airway obstruction. There are some things you can do to help while you’re waiting for emergency services to arrive.
