Module 5.1: Case study 1: At school, we reduce kilowatts

The project comes from an energy saving and efficiency center action that works with the students: curricular work, the implementation of energy saving measures in the center and the evaluation regarding the overall effect of energy consumption. The students are involved in the monitoring and evaluation phase of the center's consumption. 

  1. Initiation-exploration: At the beginning of the course, students are given external advice on electricity consumption. External advice is also given to the teacher team, on good practices in matters of energy consumption. 

  1. Introduction of new concepts: Within the area of Sciences, the different types of energy, their origin and environmental impact are studied. Every week, two students from each year check the electricity meters and write down the consumption data. They do the calculations and represent the data in a graph. When the consumption goes up, the students themselves go through the classes to inform and remember good practices. In all courses there is a student environmental informant, who is responsible for opening and closing lights, computers and projectors, opening curtains, etc. 

  1. Synthesis and evaluation: At the end of the course, a comparative study of the consumption graphs is done with all the data. Calculation of average consumption. Based on the consumption data, the CO2 emission calculations are made. 

A comparative study of the consumption of the last two courses is carried out. The results are communicated to the educational community, through a meeting or by publishing an article in the school magazine with the implementation of the improvement actions that have been done.
