Module 1.1: Case study 1: Jack Chambers PS/Canada

Which need or problem is addressed?

Case study 1 refers to a school project implemented in by a primary school in Canada. We present this case study because it is a complex project, involving both the school community and the local community. Using a variety of approaches and methods required a lot of resources, methods, knowledge and persons involved, which made project management complex and demanding.

The need this project addresses is the lack of understanding of the function of the stormwater management pond and its relationship to the urban water cycle and ecosystems among the school community and the wider neighborhood.

How is it done?

The 8th Grade students aimed to educate the public and raise awareness about the importance of the pond and its role in the environment. For this, they used variety of methods, that include Documentary, Public Art, Slogan, Collaboration with the city and Adopt a Park Program. The students created a documentary about the pond to explain its function and importance. They then organized an art project where the school community decorated a wooden amphibian or reptile. Over 800 amphibians and reptiles were hung on the font school fence as public art. “Only Rain Down the Drain” slogan was used to educate the public. The students collaborated with the London citizens to design new signs for stormwater ponds and decided to participate in the Adapt a Park program.

What is the impact for teachers / students / the community?

Through methods that were implemented during this project, students successfully educated the school community, including other students/teachers and wider neighborhood about the importance of stormwater management. Along with increasing awareness, the project has provided educational value, collaboration opportunity and recognition. The school community and citizens had an opportunity to collaborate and receive educational value via learning about the environment and the importance of protecting it. The student's documentary won Best Project at the Water Docs School Action Project, providing recognition of the efforts and encouraging others to follow green practice footsteps.
